Events : TOMS Photo Session

January 31, 2012

Today’s event inspiration is a little different than some of my previous event posts. I run Vanessa Reed Photography and last spring I did a photo session with my main inspiration being TOMS shoes. A lot of my inspiration came from events I had seen and blogged about on Reed’s Bow and I thought that today I’d share my photo session and a few of the things that inspired some of the details. For a full set of my photography from this session, you can visit : Vanessa Reed Photography.

6 Year Anniversary!

January 30, 2012

Anniversary? Yes, or maybe you could call it a Veggiversary? Whatever you want to call it… Today is my official 6 years as a Vegetarian! Crazy! I know! I’m not usually one to brag and go on about myself but, hey, today I’m going to a little! I mean SIX years! Come on, I think I deserve it at least a little!

{Guess I proved everyone wrong on that!}

I’m so super proud of myself for making it 6 years! It all started out as simple challenge to see how long I could go as a vegetarian and 6 years later what do you know. I definitely was not expecting to make it this long… to be honest I didn’t think I’d even make it to 6 months. I remember that was my original goal. After that, I just kept tacking on 6 more months, then a year, and well here we are!

So, how did it all start? A simple extra curricular class during my sophomore year in college! I saw the class while doing my schedule and I’d always wanted to try and be a vegetarian (see what all the fuss was about) but it made me nervous because I had no idea what I’d actually eat. I figured they just lived off lettuce and gross vegetables all day, every day.
{Guilty! I was one of those people!}

After I started the class, I realized it was one of the best classes – ever. It was a simple class where we went in and talked about being a vegetarian or how to become one if we wanted to. The instructor had been a vegetarian for 15+ years at that point and it really opened my eyes. Why? Because this guy was the complete opposite to what you may think of as the “typical” vegetarian. It really showed me that anyone can be a vegetarian!

{Once again – Guilty!}

He taught us so many things about vegetarians (types, etc.) and he taught us all about different foods we could make that were much more than lettuce and other leafy things. We actually had days where he would cook stuff for us or we would cook stuff in class. For our final, we had to make a meal plan for a day if we were vegetarians and we had to make at least one of the dishes. It was amazing and all of the dishes were great (well except that one person that made a fruit salad… real original!)

Anyways, that was also were I got to see Meet Your Meat for the first (and only) time. So yea, anybody that’s seen it knows what I’m talking about. I’m not even going to Google it to post a link because I honestly do not even want to put it into Google for fear of the images that will show up. I never want to see/go through that ever again. He was awesome about watching it and said that if at any point we didn’t want to sit there anymore we could leave. I left. That day was also January 30th 2006. Exactly, six years ago.

{Sounds ridiculous but after 6 years I know “that look” people get when I tell them. It’s a cross between confusion, “WHY!?” and also a little judgmental because they usually assume I’m going to judge them on their diet choices as well. Which is obviously wrong.}

In this post, I’m going to talk a little about me being a vegetarian, what it means to be a vegetarian, what’s the difference between vegan and vegetarian (yes, there is one), and a bunch of other things that go a long with it! I’m definitely not one of those vegetarians that will preach about why everyone should be a vegetarian. Honestly, my dad is from Alabama and he makes ribs every summer (even sometimes in the winter) and let me tell you they can smell absolutely amazing but I’ve learned to resist and I’ve never lectured someone on why they should be vegetarian. It’s my own personal life choice and I will never force anyone else to conform to my choices.
But, I do think being vegetarian is awesome and, of course, if you decide to be one (or already are) I’ll think you’re pretty awesome as well! I really think a lot of people don’t understand it so that’s why they shy away from it as a lifestyle so that’s why I decided to share my story and other information today. I really hope I can open everyone’s eyes to how meatless food isn’t that bad, at all, and maybe even convince you to try some things, even if you don’t decide to be a vegetarian.

{It’s a pet peeve. I won’t lie and that’s why this section is being included!}

Different Types of Vegetarians
There are so many different sources that give different names to the different types of vegetarians. I’ll try to make it as simple as possible.

Vegetarian : The term you typically hear. Most vegetarians (even if they are a subcategory of vegetarian) use this simple term. A vegetarian is someone who follows a plant based diet (excluding meats) with or without the inclusion of dairy products and eggs.

  • Semi-Vegetarian : Someone who typically follows a plant based diet but may also include fish or poultry (or sometimes other meats) in their diet.
  • Pescetarian : Vegetarian that includes fish but no other meats in their diet
  • Ovo-Vegetarian : Includes egg but not dairy products
  • Lacto-Vegetarian: Includes dairy but no eggs
  • Ovo-lacto or Lacto-ovo Vegetarian: Includes animal/dairy products such as eggs, milk and honey

When people ask me about my diet, I simply say I’m a vegetarian. Technically, I’m actually a Ovo-Lacto Pescetarian. Do I really feel like saying that? No. Will anyone other than you reading this understand what I’m saying? Probably not. So, I stick with the basic. But yes, I occasionally eat fish. For the first year or two (I honestly don’t remember now) I was strictly an Ovo-Lacto Vegetarian but after years of never having anything to eat when going out to dinner, I finally gave in and started eating fish. That’s honestly the only reason I started. I still try to find a vegetarian option while out eating but if I fail to find one, then I’ll go with a seafood option instead. I’ve been debating for some time now on going back to being strictly a vegetarian though.

There are still different types of vegetarians but I won’t go into a lot of detail because that’ll get boring… if I haven’t made you bored already! Anyways, there’s Vegans (Their diets exclude all animal flesh, and animal products including milk, honey, eggs, etc.) and may also exclude any products tested on animals or clothing made from animals (including clothing made from their fur). Being vegan is a little extreme for me and honestly I enjoy my ice cream and cheese way too much! There’s also Raw veganism and fruitarianism among many other types.

For more information:

  • Food Pyramid
  • Why Become Vegetarian : I really didn’t cover much of “Why” because like I said before I don’t like to preach vegetarianism to everyone. There’s obviously great health benefits behind becoming vegetarian!
  • Things to void when you’re Vegan : This doesn’t even start to cover the amount of things Vegans have to avoid. Dairy, eggs, gelatin, etc are in so many things! Think I’m kidding? Try no ice cream, yogurt, bread, candy… and let the list go on!
  • Famous Vegetarians : For everyone that’s super influenced by celebs! I’m sure a few of them will surprise you!
  • Vegetarian Recipes : Who doesn’t LOVE! Seriously, if you can’t find it on here it’s just not worth making!
  • : A blog I ran into only a few weeks ago and fell in love with! So, many amazing recipes! I love that they are recipes from real people, so you know they’ve been tried and are amazing!
  • Oh She Glows : I found this site only days ago and can already tell it’s going to be a favorite as well!
  • Vegetarian Problems : For a little humor and also a lot of question answering! I found this by complete accident and really enjoy checking it out every once in awhile. I gave the link to the archives because I think that’s an easier way to read through it. This is also the site where I got all of the Vegetarian Problems graphics from.

So, there you have it! My take on vegetarianism and some of the resources I use! I really hope I didn’t bore anyone too much and maybe you even learned a thing or two! As always, feel free to leave comments or message me if you have any questions that I did not answer on here!

And I’ll leave you with a few other Vegetarian problems from the above site!

{I will not get into any discussion on here about animal rights. I don’t even do that in person. I have my views. They are mine. If others have their views that is great, but after this many years I’m not planning on changing mine nor do I plan on changing yours and I accept that. I hope others respect that as well.}

{There are SO many different ways to get protein! I’ve made it 6 years and I’m not deficient in protein… Just saying!}

{I’m pretty sure warehouses with animals being farmed in them (that are genetically modified and pumped with drugs) was not what Darwin had in mind … but maybe I’m wrong.}

{To my knowledge, I think I’ve eaten meat 3+ times on accident. Once in a jalapeno popper and another time in a Dunkin Donuts egg omlet sandwich. I’m sure there’s been other times but these are the only two I know and can recall.}

It’s My Birthday!

January 28, 2012

When it comes to birthdays, I’m definitely like Lily from HIMYM! It’s your day! You have to live it up, right? Even if it’s not necessarily my birthday, I always consider it that persons big day. It’s your day to do what ever you want!

I’ve been trying to decide what to blog about today since I knew I wanted to post something and decided to go with some of my favorite birthday inspiration from my Pinterest! I have an entire board dedicated to just Events but I thought I’d narrow it down a little to just my favorite birthday things and also include some of my favorite cake/cupcakes as well!

How fun would this be to wake up to a room full of balloons! I think it’d make an amazing tradition!

I ran across this photo years ago and fell in love! What a perfect birthday dinner!

Glitter Nails

Glitter Nail Polish

Glitter Nails

Continuing my polish posts, I’ve decided to go the glitter route again! The last post was more of a Confetti style glitter with larger pieces of glitter. Today, I’ve decided to focus on my more glitter polishes… after all, it is my birthday week why not celebrate with one of these gorgeous polishes! From left to right: OPI – Absolutely Alice, Nicole’s OPI – Snowman of My Dreams and OPI – Mad as a Hatter.

I love all of these but if I had to pick my favorite I’d probably have to go with Mad as a Hatter. I’m all about the multicolors!

Covered Books

January 24, 2012

Last week I finally decided to tackle my books. I was not pleased with the appearance of them and wasn’t sure what exactly to do about it. So, I went to Pinterest, of course, and found a cute idea. Why not cover them? I had some left over brown paper from another project and decided that it would make the perfect wrap for my books and still go with the vintage look of some of the books I had on my shelves that I purchased at a festival a few years ago. I’m pretty happy with how they turned out!

As for the other decor, the mug is from Anthropologie. I picked it up a few months ago after seeing it in multiple photo shoots. Unfortunately, after only one use I noticed there’s a big chip in the bottle which makes it impossible to use as an actual mug, so for now it’s just for decoration. The candles are from Bath and Body Works and the pine cone is actually a cinnamon scented cone that I got around Christmas time.

Events : Reed’s Bow Favorites {2}

January 23, 2012

Since Reed’s Bow Favorites went over so well last week, I’ve decided to continue the series. This week I included some more of my favorite events/photos that I’ve posted on Reed’s Bow in the past. Who doesn’t love cowboys boots, The Notebook, rainbows and gorgeous floral arrangements? Enjoy! And I hope everyone has a great Monday!

Candy, anyone?

January 20, 2012

My Friday favorite this week? A perfect gift for anyone! I recently had to put together a generic gift with a $10 bunch for a co-worker. The problem? There were 7 possible recipients of this gift ranging from 25-35 years old and could be a guy or girl. I had no idea what to get… then came Pinterest (which seems to be my go-to lately for anything). I ran into this idea and went with it! So, I present the perfect way to spruce up a money gift! I split up $10 between $2 bills, $1 bills, dollar coins, half dollar coins, quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies. For the box, I used an already used chocolate box and just covered it with some gift wrap I had around the house. I really love the end result and think it’s the perfect little gift for that person you just have no idea what to give plus I think it’s more fun than getting a generic card with a $10 bill in it!

Nail Inspiration

January 18, 2012

I have a nail polish problem. Yup, I’ll admit it. Best part? I don’t care!

So, I thought I’d share my most recent inspiration for my current nail color. A friend sent me the link to the above dress and I fell in love with the mint color! Then when going through my polishes to set up a different post about nail polish I ran into an old favorite by Essie. So with a little Mint Candy Apple by Essie and some Martha Stewart glitter I present my current polish! (I love adding a little glitter detail lately)

Events : Reed’s Bow Favorites {1}

January 16, 2012

If you’ve truly creeped on my page then you’ve noticed that I actually run another blog (other than my photography one) called Reed’s Bow. It’s a simple blog I use to post event inspiration. I started it almost exactly a year ago today and have kept it up with different events that I run into while browsing different event and photographer websites. I started Reed’s Bow for future client’s in my photography business and it went off from there. So, why am I talking about it on here? I figured I’d show some of my favorite highlights from Reed’s Bow on a weekly or monthly post (I’m not sure which I want to do yet… so we’ll see).

 Wedding inspiration in an old bowling alley. Definitely something different!

Gorgeous cake that I found and instantly feel in love with!

More cake inspiration! I love different, out of the box designs.
